Google – Workflows to Gromstul

Six complete substations for the country’s most talked-about industrial project

Talk to an advisor
Groundbreaking at the site for Google data center Gromstul

At Gromstul outside Skien, Google is planning one of the world’s largest data centers. During the construction phase – which may last from five to ten years – you need robust, continuous power for thousands of workers and tons of infrastructure. Here, nothing waits in line.

Møre Trafo supplies six complete substations with 1,250 kVA transformers to the site, including insulated enclosures, switchgear, and metering cells. The substations connect to Lede’s supply grid and ensure stable power for all site work throughout the construction phase.

Our delivery includes six substations with 1,250 kVA transformers, plus insulated housings with switchgear and metering cells. Our customer is the local contractor Laugstol AS.

The Challenge

Global digital infrastructure is built in Norway, and the construction phase demands no downtime.

  • Continuous power through a long construction phase– estimated 5–10 years
  • High power for parallel construction activities – infrastructure, blasting and building
  • Connection to Lede’s grid – precise technical requirements from the grid owner

Google secured the roughly 2,000-decare site in 2019. The project was formally approved in 2025, with the data center scheduled to go live in 2026. In the meantime, the entire energy infrastructure is being built, with Møre Trafo supplying the critical working power.

The Solution

Tailor-Made for Demanding Site Operations

  • 6 complete substations
  • 1,250 kVA transformers
  • Insulated housing with switchgear and metering cell
  • Connection to Lede’s supply grid

The solution is delivered through the local contractor Laugstol AS and serves as the basic energy infrastructure for the entire construction project.

The Result

  • 6 substations in operation – secure power for all construction phases
  • Critical infrastructure in place from day one of Norway’s largest industrial project
  • The delivery shows Møre Trafos role in critical public and industrial projects

The data center represents multi-billion investments and will employ several thousand people during the construction phase.

The delivery from Møre Trafo is part of the core infrastructure that makes the project possible.
