Repairs and Upgrades

A refurbished transformer can remain in service for decades to come. It makes economic sense and supports sustainability.

Every repair and upgrade starts with a thorough condition assessment.

We always start with a thorough assessment of what happened, what can be reused, and what the different options will cost compared with investing in a new transformer. You receive a clear recommendation backed by technical reasoning, so you can make an informed decision.

Understand the Condition – Make the Right Decision

Winding Replacement and Repair After Failure
If the paper insulation has deteriorated too far, or a winding failure has occurred, the next step is to replace the windings—and often the core. In practice, this results in a transformer with new electrical characteristics and, in many cases, increased capacity, while the tank, cover, and conservator are reused.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
We start with a thorough assessment: visual inspection, electrical measurements, and oil analysis. DGA identifies the type of fault; electrical measurements pinpoint its location. You receive a clear assessment of the situation and a specific recommendation.

Winding and Insulation Repairs
We can manufacture new primary and secondary windings, replace paper insulation, and insulate the fluid as part of a repair.

Bushing and Switchgear Repairs
We replace defective bushings and repair associated high-voltage components in switchgear.

Insulating Fluid Treatment
After a fault, the oil may be contaminated by particles or degraded materials. We can drain and filter the existing insulating fluid or refill with new insulating fluid.

Testing and Documentation
All repaired and upgraded transformers undergo the same final inspections in accordance with IEC standards as our newly manufactured transformers. A test report is provided after testing.

Upgrades – Meet New Requirements Without Buying New

Many transformers in Norwegian grids are 30–50 years old. They are durable—but they were not designed for today’s grid demands. Higher power demand, new connections, and stricter energy efficiency requirements can make an upgrade a better choice than buying new.

Increased Capacity

By switching to a different type of insulating fluid, you can increase the transformer's capacity by 10–15%.

Environmental Upgrade

For transformers in sensitive areas—near drinking water sources, protected natural areas, or densely populated areas—we can use natural ester fluid (FR3), which is 99% biodegradable and offers high fire safety.
