Vy Buss charging infrastructure for electric buses

Vy Buss is Norway’s largest bus company and a leading player in the electrification of Norwegian public transport. To make the shift to zero-emission operations happen, Møre Trafo has delivered transformers and substations to key charging facilities – both in Slemmestad and at Alnabru in Oslo.

Alnabru is the Nordic region’s largest charging facility for buses, with 10 MW of charging infrastructure and capacity for simultaneous charging of 30 buses, 12 of them with fast charging. Møre Trafo supplied four 2,000 kVA transformers – the backbone of the entire facility.

The traditional market in construction, infrastructure and rail is still our largest. At the same time, we see that the green transition and electrification of transport are growing fastest and will become an increasingly important market for us going forward.
Tore Tangen, District Manager East/West Norway, Møre Trafo

The Challenge

Hundreds of electric buses in daily operation needed charging infrastructure that never lets you down.

  • 10 MW total charging capacity at Alnabru– the Nordic region’s largest bus charging facility
  • Simultaneous charging of 30 buses – demanding power peaks in the morning and evening rush
  • 12 fast chargers – extra demands on voltage stability and capacity assurance
  • Zero-emission operations by 2028 – Ruter’s requirements demand reliable infrastructure choices

2019–2020 were the breakthrough years for electric buses in Norway, and Vy Buss was an early mover. In Møre og Romsdal, Ålesund was the first city with electric buses in service, operated by Vy – and the experience from there will shape further electrification in the region.

The Solution

Tailor-Made for Green Public Transport

  • Alnabru: 4 × 2,000 kVA transformers (415 V) – 10 MW total output
  • Slemmestad: 1 × 1,600 kVA transformer with biodegradable oil
  • Slemmestad: MAXI substation with high-voltage system
  • Slemmestad: Dedicated MAXI substation for low-voltage switchboards for the charging system
  • Contractor Slemmestad: OneCo Sør

The solutions handle high and variable power demand in urban areas with continuous, critical public transport operations – and are sized for further growth in the bus fleet.

The Result

  • The Nordic region’s largest charging facility for buses – in stable commercial operation
  • 10 MW secure charging capacity at Alnabru – 30 buses simultaneously
  • Slemmestad in Operation – Vy Buss Electrified Along the Oslofjord

Ruter aims for all public transport under their responsibility to be emission-free by 2028. Møre Trafo is a key supplier of the infrastructure that makes this possible.

Deliveries to Vy Buss confirm Møre Trafo’s role as a preferred partner in the electrification of public transport – from the first pioneer projects to full-scale green mobility.
