“I really thrive here. It’s a great and attractive workplace with very good terms – and plenty of new challenges to get your teeth into,” says the young electrical power engineer.

Møre Trafo Is Running Full Tilt – Now Marianne Gets New Colleagues

Marianne Waagan, electrical power MSc engineer at Møre Trafo

Summer Job and Master’s Degree

Marianne is from Kristiansund, but lives with her partner in Ålesund. After a summer job and a master’s thesis on eddy currents and energy losses in transformers, Marianne was offered a job even before she finished her studies in Trondheim.

Steep Learning

“There’s been a lot of new things, big challenges and steep learning curves. But I was prepared for that. During my studies we heard from day one that when you train as an engineer, what you learn at school isn’t always the most important thing. What matters is that you learn how to learn fast in working life,” says Marianne.

Skilled Colleagues

Before she started at Møre Trafo, she had limited experience with 3D modeling and design on a computer. Now she has learned an enormous amount in a short time.

“Not least with help from very skilled colleagues,” says Marianne.

She gets training on everything, and she has also spent time in production to get to know the product she designs.

Transformer for Dad

“I helped assemble a transformer that, funnily enough, was headed for Seivika in Kristiansund and the electric ferries in Fjord 1 – where my father works. So now I just hope it does the job so I get to come home for Christmas,” Marianne laughs.

The Only Woman

She is the only female engineer at Scandinavia’s largest manufacturer of distribution transformers and fully assembled substations. Now she hopes they will soon be two, but first and foremost she hopes to see applications from skilled, competent young engineers. Bringing in younger people is something Møre Trafo works on with a clear focus.

Forward-Looking Company

Møre Trafo is booming and had a new record month in September. It’s not just a secure workplace, but also an attractive one, in a company that constantly stays at the forefront of development and invests heavily in automation and new technology.

Great terms

“So far, the job has met my expectations. And as I mentioned, the terms here are very good. Even though I’m young, I also think a bit long term. Møre Trafo has a lot of very good schemes – including a pension scheme that made my partner – he is also

a civil engineer – seriously jealous,” says Marianne with a smile.

Students Like Møre Trafo

Marianne has herself contributed as a Møre Trafo ambassador and presented the company to the EMIL students (the energy and environmental engineering student association) at NTNU in Trondheim together with Møre Trafo’s District Manager for Central Norway, Nils Johan Sylte. In surveys after these presentations, a large share of the students have answered that Møre Trafo appears as an attractive company both for summer jobs and permanent positions.

Should Say Yes

“I plan to stay for quite a while if Møre Trafo wants to keep me on after the six-month trial period. A tunnel from Magerholm would have been gold, but a 14-minute ferry ride with frequent departures is still perfectly fine,” says Marianne, who believes applicants offered a job at Møre Trafo have every reason to say yes with a smile.

Engineering Challenge

CEO Leif Leira says the biggest challenge is finding power engineering graduates, so they run targeted, continuous recruitment efforts, including towards students. Møre Trafo is now looking for a Sales Engineer, Power Engineers, a Substation Engineer, and an IT-

service staff member.

Going Very Well

“A couple of the positions will replace employees who are leaving. Power engineers and a Substation engineer are new positions that show that Møre Trafo is doing very well and that we need to increase our capacity,” says Leira.

Younger

Møre Trafo has worked systematically over time to bring in younger employees and will keep doing that. At the same time, a certain level of experience combined with solid skills and education is something we emphasize when hiring.

“We’d be happy to see more female engineers at Møre Trafo, but we’re not a completely male-dominated company. We have women employed both in production and in commercial positions,” says Leira.

A Good Colleague

– How would you describe a good Møre Trafo employee?

“High work capacity, strong communication and collaboration skills, structured, builds trust and stays positive. When we find the right person, they get solid training on products and IT systems, a good working environment, flexible hours, a good collective pension scheme and good, competitive terms,” says Leira.
