The stellar figures are also good news for employees at Møre Trafo. Ten percent of all profit before tax goes to the employees, a scheme Møre Trafo has practiced for many years.

“We have incredibly skilled and dedicated employees,” says the head of Scandinavia’s largest producer of distribution transformers and prefabricated substations about the people who keep things running at Møre Trafo.

While the pandemic has created major challenges for many companies, Møre Trafo got through 2020 and the pandemic without layoffs. The company has run at close to full capacity and has also made several new hires to meet the rising demand.

The Green Transition

– Much of the market growth is driven by the green transition and increasing electrification of society. We have managed to put ourselves in a strong position to be competitive in this segment, which is all about infrastructure for charging cars, buses and ferries. The steadily growing use of computing power in most areas also means that power-hungry data parks are becoming a very exciting market for us. Møre Trafo is also seeing solid development in the export market, says Leira.

Signals

The electrification of Norway is a welcome development. In recent years, there have also been clear political signals that the power grid must become more robust. That too is good news for Møre Trafo.

Record Investment

To stay competitive and ahead of the curve, Møre Trafo has invested heavily in new machines and increased automation – roughly NOK 90 million over the past 10 years.

– In 2020 we also made major investments, installing a new and highly advanced cutting line with packing robot. The 13 million kroner automation is so far the largest single investment in Møre Trafo’s almost 70-year history, says Leira.

Biggest in Norway

Leira is, naturally enough, very pleased with the situation. Møre Trafo is running at full speed, and Leira believes the outlook is also very good for the company, which is the largest in Norway in transformers with a market share of around 50 percent, and the second largest in sales of substations. Møre Trafo currently has a production area of 13,500 square meters and 145 employees. A solid number of applicants for open positions also shows that Møre Trafo is a highly attractive workplace in the industrial town of Sykkylven.
