Good start

Møre Trafo also has a good start to 2019, and could in addition enter the new year with a large order backlog.

“The strong start is because activity has been unusually high at a time of year we previously saw as ‘a bit low season’,” says Rieve Kristiansen.

Bright Outlook

The CEO of Scandinavia’s largest producer of distribution transformers and prefabricated substations sees few dark clouds on the horizon and believes the outlook is good for the cornerstone company in Sykkylven.

Largest

Møre Trafo is the largest transformer supplier in Norway with a market share of around 50 percent, and the second largest in substation sales. Møre Trafo operates in a tough market with ever harder competition and increasing pressure on margins.

Electrification

“There is nothing to indicate that there will be less work this year than before. A lot now revolves around electrification, such as charging for electric ferries and charging stations for electric cars. When it comes to ferries, much of our market is on the west coast. For charging stations for electric cars, our area is the whole country,” says Rieve Kristiansen.

Norway’s electrification is a welcome development, and in recent years there have also been clear political signals that the power grid must become more robust. And that is good for Møre Trafo. In addition, Møre Trafo is seeing strong development in the export market.

Investments

To stay competitive and ahead of the curve, Møre Trafo has invested heavily in new machinery and partly in automation over the last 10–12 years, for a total of roughly 80 million.

“This year too, we will invest 10–12 million to modernize our production,” says Møre Trafo CEO Tor Rieve Kristiansen.

Electric
Whether the mood – when the annual results are ready – will be as electric as it was in 2016 remains to be seen. 2016 was so far the best year in Møre Trafo’s 68-year history. Turnover was 340 million and profit was about 33 million kroner.
Møre Trafo currently has 135 employees and a production area of 13,500 square meters.
