Salmon Evolution salmon facility

At Indre Harøy in Hustadvika, Salmon Evolution is building one of Europe’s largest land-based salmon farms. The facility is being built in a disused quarry and developed in phases, with a target of 36,000 tons of salmon per year at full build-out.

Møre Trafo supplies 11 transformers to the project through Nettpartner Prosjekt in Molde. All are custom-built to meet the requirements for safe and energy-efficient operation in a continuous production environment where operations never stop.

For us this is an important order, both because it is a large and technically demanding project, and because it is in our local area. It shows that Møre Trafo is competitive also in the largest and most complex industrial projects.
Olav Dalsbotten, Senior Sales Engineer, Møre Trafo

The Challenge

Land-based salmon farming at industrial scale demands extreme operational reliability – the fish can’t wait.

  • Continuous production– fish welfare demands stable power at all times
  • Energy Efficiency as a Requirement – the facility receives Enova funding for new flow-through and recovery technology
  • Rectifier Operation – the transformers require a shield in the winding
  • Low oil level under 1,000 liters – simplifies setup and installation

The first construction phase has an estimated cost of NOK 1.3 billion and provides capacity for 9,000 tons of salmon. Artec Aqua is the turnkey supplier and coordinates all interfaces. Salmon Evolution’s new technology cuts energy use per kilo of fish by around 30 percent.

The Solution

Tailor-Made for Sustainable Aquaculture Operations

  • 8 × 2,000 kVA transformers
  • 3 × 2,500 kVA transformers
  • Voltage: 22,000 / 415 V
  • FR3 environmental oil – biodegradable
  • Screen in the winding for rectifier operation
  • Oil collection tray included

All transformers are supplied with an oil level below 1,000 liters, which gives easier placement, faster installation, and reduced environmental risk.

The Result

  • 11 transformers deliveredto Norway and Europe’s most ambitious aquaculture project
  • 30% lower energy use per kg of fish– new technology and the right sizing
  • Local delivery – Møre Trafo and Salmon Evolution both rooted on the Northwest Coast

“We currently deliver large transformers to data centers, ferry and bus terminals, and land-based fish farms. This project confirms our position as a supplier of rugged, tailor-made solutions for demanding industry and energy projects,” says Olav Dalsbotten.

The delivery has a value of around NOK 2.5 million and shows Møre Trafo’s growth power in the aquaculture segment.
